Philanthropy
The members of Friendship Square Quilt Guild are involved in many philanthropy projects throughout the year. Some are Blocks for the Brave, Kumfort Quilts, an Afghanistan project and Christmas stockings for service personnel. You will find details about these projects below. If you would like more information about any of these projects or would like to be involved in any of them, feel free to contact us via our e-mail at fsqg81@yahoo.com
KUMFORT QUILTS
The Kumfort Quilt Group is a charity group within the guild which aims to serve the needs of the people in our community and the surrounding areas by providing lap quilts for various organizations. Our volunteers assemble kits composed of a quilt top, backing and batting and a label which are all bagged and made available at our guild's general meetings. The members who choose to may take the components and create the finished quilts and return them to us for distribution to the various community organizations. We aim to deliver these quilts in hopes that they will bring comfort, warmth and a smile.
OPERATION BLOCKS FOR THE BRAVE
Operation Blocks for the Brave is part of a nationwide effort to provide quilts to service personnel who have been wounded while serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Members of Friendship Square Quilt Guild participate by making quilts using patriotic fabrics in red, white and blue. Since March of 2008, FSQG has contributed to the making of more than 185 quilts. The quilts are then delivered to the VA hospital in Los Angeles for distribution. It is a very rewarding project and the wounded veterans are very appreciative.

AFGHANISTAN PROJECT
FSQG has undertaken a project to supply service and civilian personnel stationed in Afghanistan with fabric and yarn as well as sewing, knitting and crocheting supplies. The group is part of COIN--a counter insurgency project established to win the hearts and minds of the local people. These 7-8 women involved knit, sew and crochet to make baby clothing and quilts to give to local hospitals and orphanages in the Kabul area and for the chaplain to distribute to needy families. They work 12 hour days and spend their evenings in the common room enjoying each other's company as they do their needlework. Two have sewing machines that they have had shipped over. Others knit, crochet or hand-tie quilts as well as teach other (and some men) skills needed to complete the projects. They are so passionate about this endeavor that the supplies are used as fast as we can collect them and ship them over.
